It is heartening that Chinchinim Panchayat and MLA have finally woken up. The residents for over 10 years are pursuing the issue at all levels. Representations have been given to all concerned authorities. The bypass plan was officially raised by former CM Parrikar who had flagged off 3 alternative routes .Technical feasibility and cost effectiveness for 2 km stretch is detailed. The village will be divided. Two major junctions can best be avoided. Relaying power, water, telephones lines adds to costs. Ancestral residences will be destroyed for the second time causing painful readjustment. The acquisition for two lanes is now stretched to 4 lanes. No displacement, demolition is needed for bypass proposal. Centre has informed that state is dragging its feet. Acquisition at a paltry Rs13 per metre is dominating factor. The villagers have agreed to return the compensation with interest. The stretch beyond Chinchinim is still to be acquired. The tamasha over cutting of trees is not a weighty concern as there is provision for replanting, etc. What is a serious matter is scarce land resource already frozen by 45 metres on either side.
