It is learnt that in a bold and ambitious move to tackle the persistent garbage menace in Vasco city, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) is reportedly seriously considering doing away with garbage bins entirely from its jurisdiction. It is a fact that garbage bins by the roadside present an ugly site and the presence of the bins is inadvertently encouraging indiscriminate dumping. The unconventional idea stems from a recent council tour to Bengaluru. Here the garbage is being collected by garbage collection vehicles with rounds in each locality. Residents would come out and dump waste directly into the vehicles. It is learnt that a trial run was conducted in the densely populated New Vaddem which reportedly received a tremendous response. At the outset additional garbage vehicles will be required which will entail costs. Secondly this system is not much different from the door-to-door collection of garbage which has failed miserably. For the initiative to succeed citizens will have to show more discipline like the residents in Bengaluru. Instead of carrying out the exercise, the civic body should try by not collecting the fees for door-to-door garbage collection.
