Kudos to the family of the 19-year-old lad, who was declared brain dead, for taking a very difficult but noble decision of donating their son’s organs. This act helped save 4 other lives through the donation of heart, liver & kidneys. Brain stem death is caused by a severe and irreversible injury to the brain due to reasons such as road traffic accidents, brain haemorrhage and such others. In brain death, all areas of brain are damaged, and all activities stop. Goa has 44 patients on the kidney waiting list, waiting to receive a life-saving organ. There are different ways in which one can pledge for organ donation: By ticking the box on Form 2 of RTO driving / renewal license, by signing up for Donor Card on the websites of SOTTO “ Goa or MOHAN Foundation or NOTTO (National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization). Most importantly, one needs to inform their family or next in kin of their wish, as consent by family is legally required at the time of donating organs when we are no more.
