Harmful effects of air pollution

SAHILI S DESSAI, Curchorem | OCTOBER 22, 2020, 11:16 PM IST

Air pollution is a problem nation-wide. The pollution hangs over our cities and is harmful and destroys living things and materials.

Diesel exhaust is one of the most dangerous sources of air pollution. This type of pollution comes from on road vehicles such as large trucks and buses although factories, construction equipment and farms are big polluters too.

Pollution from diesel engines contributes to about 80% of the added cancer risk from toxic air pollution nationwide. Acid rain is more dangerous as it causes acidification of rivers and lakes.

Earlier the air we breathe in used to be pure and fresh. But, due to increasing industrialization and concentration of poisonous gases in the environment the air is getting more and more toxic day by day.

Also, these gases are the cause of many respiratory and other diseases. Moreover, the rapidly increasing human activities like the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation is the major cause of air pollution.

It’s time we all take steps to stop the air pollution.
