It’s not affordable for common people in Goa to benefit from the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana despite a 60% subsidy, because their income levels don’t allow them to pay the remaining cost. An EMI system should be introduced, with the subsidy deducted upfront, so that more people can actually avail this scheme. The state government should assist by ensuring that solar panels, iron angles, batteries, inverters, etc., are provided on easy instalments.
The Government of India approved the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana on 29th February 2024, with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, to increase rooftop solar capacity and help households generate their own electricity. It will run till FY 2026-27 and be implemented by national and state agencies. The scheme offers 60% subsidy for systems up to 2kW and 40% for 2–3kW systems, capped at 3kW. At current prices, this means Rs 30,000 for 1kW, Rs 60,000 for 2kW and Rs 78,000 for 3kW or more. It’s a good scheme, but there is no awareness among the public. So whose duty is it to take it to the people? Let it benefit all, especially the common man.
