Tourists drive rashly only in rented vehicles

The state government has asserted that 70 percent of road accidents in Goa are linked to rent-a-car and rent-a-bike vehicles used by tourists and has called for strict enforcement of traffic rules and public cooperation in order to bring down the accident rate in the state. Goa reportedly has the highest vehicle-to-people ratio in the country and has been recording around 365 deaths due to road accidents, which amounts to almost one death per day on average. Fatalities also include pedestrians who lose their lives through no fault of their own. Goans have long demanded a halt to the rent-a-vehicle business as it also causes parking issues, with rental vehicles occupying city parking areas and depriving citizens of much-needed parking space.

Adding to this problem is the fact that reportedly over 500 private vehicles are allegedly operating illegal rent-a-bike and rent-a-car services. These vehicles face strict action, including cancellation of their registration. One particular reason why so many accidents are linked to rental vehicles is that tourists drive these vehicles recklessly as the vehicles do not belong to them. Several tourists drive to the state in their own vehicles. However, these tourists take extra precautions while driving their own vehicles; hence they are not involved in as many road accidents. On the contrary, while driving rental vehicles, tourists engage in stunts, drunken driving, and even drive on the beach sand and at the edge of the sea. The salt water can damage the engine of the vehicle, but these tourists are least bothered as the vehicle does not belong to them.

It is true that the business of vehicle rental services provides a livelihood to several people. However, at the same time, the authorities concerned need to take necessary action in order to ensure public safety. Tourists who rent a vehicle need to follow strict rules and regulations and should be held responsible for the accidents they are involved in.
