Damodar English High School, Gudi emerged winners of the South Goa district hockey championship, defeating Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Utorda 2-0 in the sub-junior hockey championship 2023 organised by Goan Hockey at DSYA Seraulim ground. They will now meet the north district champions on February 20 at Peddem ground, Mapusa.
Pranav Borkar put Damodar ahead in the 8th minute of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Mulahil and Mahadev of Lourdes School were at their best to defuse all the attacks by Damodar boys. However, Lourdes Boys could not achieve any results due to the tough defence of the Gudi school.
In the 46th minute, hard-working Kunal Goankar, the captain of the Gudi school, scored the second goal after great understanding with Pranav and Maruti, 2-0. In the last quarter, the Lourdes boys exerted pressure but could not find the back of the net.
In the sub-junior championship, six boys and four girls teams participated in the tournament. Damodar English School, Gudi topped Pool A while OL of Lourdes, Utorda topped Pool B. In the girls' section, Perpetual Convent HS, Navelim, St Joseph Institute, Chandor, Maria Bambina, Cuncolim, and OL of Lourdes, Utorda, took part in the tournament. Perpetual Convent, Navelim got the better of St Joseph Institute, Chandor 2-0 in the girls' section to qualify for the State championship, which will be played at Peddem, Mapusa.
Nelly Rodriguez, Ex ZP, chairperson was the chief guest for the finals and distributed prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of Benny Viages, Anjulo P Fernandes, and Inacio Fernandes.
