Former international footballer Mario Soares has been diagnosed with cancer and has requested the help of the football family in this critical stage of his life, both in terms of monetary help and prayers.
Soares, who hails the football-passionate village of Chinchinim, played for some of the major clubs like Dempo SC and Salgaocar and also represented the state and country, one for the players of the golden generation which shone on the football stage after taking steps of the football game in the Salcete village.
After hanging his football shoes, the 57-year-old worked as an assistant coach with Churchill Brothers and Salgaocar SC.
A month back, Mario was shocked to find that he has been diagnosed with cancer.
“Please consider donating to my cancer treatment fund and sharing this message with others who may wish to support me. Together, we can overcome this challenge,” the former footballer has said in his message ‘Help Mario Soares Fight Cancer.
In his message to his friends, colleagues and well-wishers, shared on various WhatsApp groups.
“I, Mario Soares, humbly come before you today, not just as a football coach and player, but as someone fighting a deeply personal battle-a battle against cancer. Football has always been my life's passion. It has given me so much joy and purpose, and I've been fortunate enough to share that with many of you, both on and off the field. However, now I face a challenge that I cannot overcome alone,” the message said.
“My cancer diagnosis has been overwhelming, and the treatment required is extensive and costly. As someone who has always believed in teamwork, I am turning to you, my football family, and the public, in this time of great need. The physical, emotional, and financial toll of this illness is beyond what I can manage by myself,” it added.
“I appeal to you for your support, through donations, big or small, to help me get the treatment I desperately need. Your contribution will not only assist in covering the medical costs but will also give me hope and strength to continue this fight.
“To those who have cheered me on from the stands, trained alongside me, or trusted me as a coach-I thank you in advance for any help you can offer. In football, we know that the strength of a team can turn any game around, and I now need your strength more than ever.
