Former Olympian, Arjuna awardee and ex-India national hockey coach and captain Joaquim Carvalho met with Velim MLA Cruz Silva to present a comprehensive plan for developing hockey in the Velim constituency.
Carvalho, who represented India at the 1984 Olympics and hails from Orel Assolna, emphasized the importance of grassroots development in his proposal. He called for the installation of small artificial hockey pitches in schools and villages to nurture young talent.
“Goa has made significant contributions to Indian sports, particularly in hockey, with several Goan-origin Olympians, including Joaquim Carvalho and Dr. Vecs Paes, representing the country. Our goal is to have more players from Goa competing at the national level and for this to happen, we need a solid grassroots development program and artificial pitches in schools and villages,” Carvalho said in his plan.
He also advocated for small-sized artificial pitches (40m x 50m), following the successful model implemented in Punjab, which has led to improved player development. Carvalho believes these pitches would allow young players in villages and schools to train year-round, without the need for long-distance travel.
“Modern hockey is played on artificial turfs, so installing these in villages is essential. The convenience of having these facilities nearby will provide children with access to regular training, improving their skills and putting Goa on the hockey map,” he explained.
Carvalho highlighted the many advantages of artificial turfs, including their durability, low maintenance, and suitability for various weather conditions. They offer a smooth and consistent playing surface, crucial for performance and safety, and can be used for a wide range of sports. Additionally, synthetic turf reduces pollution and eliminates the need for lawnmowers.
He also emphasized that the artificial turfs could be used by coaches, players, and physical education teachers for training and practice. Local clubs, schools, and sports enthusiasts could organize to manage the facility and ensure its use.
Carvalho expressed confidence that MLA Cruz Silva, with his passion for sports and strong work ethic, would take the necessary steps to advance the plan.
“Given your dedication to sports and prompt action, I am sure you will push this initiative forward for the promotion and development of hockey in your constituency and across Goa,” Carvalho concluded.
