Goa University’s annual inter-collegiate men’s football championship 2022-23 began on Saturday. The matches are being played two venues -- Goa University football ground, Taleigao and Rosary College football ground, Navelim.
Five matches were played on the first day of the championship. At Goa University ground, Goa Multi-Faculty College, Dharbandora defeated GVM’S College Ponda 3-0. Siddhant Gawas scord for GMFC in the first half. In the second half, GMFC scored two goals as Darshan Pujari found the net and Siddhant scored his second goal of the match.
In the second match, Parvatibai Chowgule College defeated Govt College, Pernem 3-2. The first half score was 1-2 in favor of Chowgule College. Rakesh Sawal scored for the Pernem college while the two goals of Chowgule College were scored by Jorryn D’costa and Trevor D’mello. In a hard-fought second half, Rakesh Sawal equalised for Govt College, 2-2. At the near end of the match, a goal from Jorden Borges sealed the victory for Chowgule College, 3-2.
The third match was a one-sided affair where DM's College and Research Centre, Assagao dispatched GR Kare College of Law, Margao 8-0. Malik Saunar, Nicolas D'Costa and Ankit Shirodkar scored a brace each and the other two goals were scored by Rahul Mapsekar and Manjunath Gaonkar.
At Rosary College ground, Navelim, Govt College Quepem defeated Mandre College 4-1. Maximo D’costa scored in the first half and Valroy Cardozo netted a hat-trick in the last few minutes of the match for Rosary College. The only goal for Mandre College was scored in the first half by Sanchet Gawade.
The second match between CES College and Government College, Borda went to a tiebreaker after the match was deadlocked 2-2. For CES College, the first goal was scored by Varkey Bhengra and the equaliser came in the dying minutes from Sandeep Chaudhary as Govt College, Borda scored through Macbon Fernandes and an own goal by the rival defenders. The game was finally decided through a tiebreaker in which CES College won 3-2.
