In a significant development for hockey in Goa, Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Ramesh Tawadkar, announced plans to set up an International Hockey Stadium in Canacona.
The announcement came during a felicitation ceremony held to honour the Goan Hockey Junior Women’s Team, which recently participated in the 15th Hockey India Junior Women’s Championship 2025 in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
Speaking at the event, Tawadkar revealed that preliminary discussions have already taken place with Goans Hockey officials, and the proposed stadium is envisioned as a key step in boosting the state’s sports infrastructure. “Canacona will soon emerge as a major sports hub,” he said, adding that the stadium will also house a dedicated Hockey Academy, aimed at nurturing young talent and producing quality players for Goa.
“The state government is committed to promoting sports and will take all necessary steps to strengthen sports infrastructure, especially in regions like Canacona,” Tawadkar assured during his address.
The event was attended by several dignitaries including Abhay Bhamaikar, President of Goans Hockey, Farel Furtado, Secretary of Goans Hockey, Siya Sheikh, President of Gowomania Trust, Dhaku Madkaikar, President of North Goa Zilla Parishad, Nelly Rodrigues, Secretary of South Goa Hockey, and Dr. Ajay Gaude.
