Goa’s Karishma Shirvoikar is currently training with the Indian senior women’s national football team at a preparatory camp in Bengaluru, ahead of two international friendlies against Uzbekistan.
The 22-year-old striker is the only Goan player in the squad and is determined to make her presence felt as the team builds towards a crucial phase in international competition.
India will face Uzbekistan on May 30 and June 3 at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru as part of their preparations for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers. The qualifiers will take place in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where India has been placed in Group B alongside Mongolia (June 23), Timor-Leste (June 29), Iraq (July 2), and host nation Thailand (July 5).
Karishma, who hails from Odxel village, began her football journey seven years ago playing on the beaches of Goa with boys. Since then, she has steadily risen through the ranks, representing clubs such as Panjim Footballers, PVC Parra, Gokulam Kerala, Mumbai Knights, and Kickstart. She also featured for the India Under-17 national team — a significant milestone in her early career.
"It's a great honour to be part of the Indian football team camp. We are determined to showcase our best performance and make our nation proud on the international stage," said Karishma.
Reflecting on her development, she shared, "I’ve played under a few coaches, each with their own style and philosophy. There’s been a lot of learning and unlearning, but it’s been a brilliant journey so far."
Currently training under coach Crispin Chettri, Karishma praised his clarity and guidance. “He’s very approachable. Whenever someone makes a mistake, he stops the session and explains what needs to be corrected. It really helps us improve,” she said.
With an eye on cementing her place in the squad for the AFC qualifiers, Karishma remains focused and motivated. “The upcoming tournament is crucial for me, and I will work tirelessly on my shortcomings to make the most of every opportunity,” she said.
