Khandi Bandoi Boys won the Edoviso Dias Memorial football tournament defeating TP Boys 4-3 in the sudden death of the tiebreaker after the teams played a 2-2 draw during the regulation time in the final of the tournament organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim at Fr Druston and Wellington ground, Cavelossim on Sunday.
Khandi Bandoi Boys played a superior game and took the lead through veteran Charles Rodrigues when he shot past Rosario in the TP goal, off an assist from Alex Rodrigues. Crossing over, Khandi Bandoi Boys increased the lead when defender Shane Cardozo fouled Asher Rodrigues in the penalty area to concede a penalty. The spot kick was easily converted by Charles to score his second goal.
TP Boys fought hard and reduced the margin when Dazlan crossed the ball to Elly, who gave a neat through pass to Raju Cardozo who made no mistake to make it 2-1. Buoyed by the goal, TP Boys raided the opponents and a shot taken by Raju at the goal was handled by defender Aston Vaz and referee Akash once again pointed to the spot. Clifton Cardozo converted the penalty to level the score 2-2.
In the tiebreaker, Asher, Charles, Flanco and Aston Vaz were on target for Khandi Bandoi Boys while Raju Cardozo, Clifton Cardozo and Dazlon converted for TP Boys. Kane Cardozo's kick was saved by goalkeeper Alex to seal the title for Khandi Bandoi Boys.
Individual prizes: First scorer - Charles Rodrigues (Khandi Bandoi Boys), Best goalkeeper - Sunny Vaz (Khandi Bandoi Boys), Best half - Alex Rodrigues (Khandi Bandoi Boys), Best forward - Raju Cardozo (TP Boys), Best defender - Mapher Rodrigues (Khandi Bandoi Boys).
The finals were preceded by an exhibition match between under-14 teams of Carmona SC and hosts SCC Cavelossim which was won by Carmona SC 2-0. Florey Dias, daughter-in-law of late Edoviso Dias along with Fr Ubaldo Fernandes, Parish Priest of Holy Cross Church, Yuri Ferrao and Oscar D'Mello, president and secretary of Carmona SC respectively, were the guests of honour who gave away the prizes to the winners. The tournament was sponsored by Octaviano Dias, Ex-Superintendent of Panaji Municipal Council and son of late Edoviso Dias. Francis Rodrigues, president, compered while Viriato Mendes, chairman of the club proposed a vote of thanks. The final was witnessed by a good Sunday crowd on a clear, dry evening.
