Navelim Villagers Union stun UC Benaulim in penalty shootout thriller

MARGAO

Navelim Villagers Union defied the odds—and a numerical disadvantage—to edge past United Club of Benaulim with a 6-5 win on penalties, in a dramatic opener of the 34th Super Soccer Football Tournament at Dando Ground, Benaulim.

Capitalizing on their extra man, Benaulim surged ahead with goals from Stallone Fernandes and Keegan, taking a commanding 2-0 lead by the 37th minute.

But Navelim refused to surrender. With their backs against the wall, goalkeeper Jeet produced a series of crucial saves to keep his team in the game. The momentum began to shift when Ronaldo Pereira pulled one back late in the second half. Then, in a moment of late drama, Noah Luis struck a stunning injury-time equalizer, sending the match into a tense penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Navelim held their nerve. Ronaldo, Noah, Sandroy, and Meliston all converted their spot-kicks, while Benaulim faltered with two crucial misses.

For his relentless energy and crucial goal, Ronaldo Pereira was named Man of the Match. The trophy was presented by AIFF’s Franky Fernandes and GFA’s Anthony Leo Fernandes.
