CANACONA
The Polem Cricket Club has requested 40,000 sqm of land from the Loliem-Polem comunidade for the construction of a well-equipped cricket stadium in Canacona.
Office bearers of the Polem Cricket Club, which is affiliated with the Goa Cricket Association (GCA), Deepak Tuko Pagi and Mukesh Krishna Naik, stated that the club has submitted a formal request to the Loliem-Polem comunidade to allot suitable land either to the Club or to the GCA for the purpose of building the stadium.
"The Goa Cricket Association (GCA) will provide the necessary financial and overall support for the construction of a sports ground here. We have accordingly discussed this with the office bearers of the Goa Cricket Association," wrote the Polem Cricket Club in a letter to the Loliem-Polem comunidade.
The club emphasized that the only challenge in constructing a cricket stadium in Canacona is the availability of suitable land. If the Loliem-Polem comunidade can lease about 40,000 sqm of land by completing all required formalities, a quality sports ground or cricket stadium could become available to sports and cricket lovers in the Loliem-Polem panchayat area and the entire Canacona taluka, the PCC stated in its letter.
The PCC has also requested the Loliem-Polem Village Panchayat to pass a resolution in support of the proposal and forward the same to the village comunidade.
When contacted, Loliem-Polem comunidade President Vishwanath Warik confirmed that they had received a request letter from the Polem Cricket Club for land measuring 40,000 sqm to set up a cricket stadium in the village.
Meanwhile, the PCC’s request for land is significant for two reasons. First, the Loliem-Polem comunidade recently approved five proposals to allot a total of 1 lakh sqm of land to a limited company—where Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar is one of the five directors—for setting up multi-food processing units and banana plantations in the village.
Second, during a recent public function attended by BCCI General Secretary Rohan Desai, GCA office bearers appealed for land to be allotted for a cricket stadium, assuring that the GCA would construct a magnificent facility in Canacona.
