MARGAO: SFX Camarxete registered a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bhatti United Club in the inaugural match of the 3rd Caniza Peixoto Memorial Football Tournament, organised by Black Arrow Boys Agxem Sports Club, Curtorim, at St Alex Church Ground on Monday.
Bhatti United came closest to opening the scoring when Jovial Dias was neatly set up by Selton Peixoto, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.
SFX Camarxete responded swiftly on the counterattack. James Fernandes delivered a long pass to Anslem Fernandes, who controlled the ball expertly before firing a powerful shot from inside the box into the back of the net to give his side the lead. SFX Camarxete carried their 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
After the change of ends, Bhatti United stepped up their attacking efforts through Ralf Dias, Macroy Peixoto and Selton Peixoto. However, the SFX Camarxete defence stood firm and successfully repelled every attack to preserve their slender lead until the final whistle.
Earlier, the tournament was formally inaugurated by Fr Milagres Dias of Carmel Chapel, Curtorim, in the presence of club members and football enthusiasts.
Anslem Fernandes was adjudged Man of the Match for scoring the decisive goal and received the award from Fr Milagres Dias.
