India women’s football team goalkeeper coach Mario Aguair credited his players after their side scripted a famous 2-1 victory over Thailand to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup in Australia. The Goan Everyday caught up with Aguair to discuss the win, the season so far, and the road ahead.

"The season has been absolutely brilliant—a real rollercoaster," Aguair said. "Emotionally, the players are very attached to each other. This win is a reward for their dedication. Every single one of them deserves credit."

Looking ahead, Aguair emphasized the importance of planning: "We had a vision for the coming year. One thing I made clear was the need to identify and nurture talented players. The style of play was left to the coach, but our aim was always to get the best out of the squad."

He added, "Now it’s time to go back to the drawing board, reflect, and strategize. We’ll have discussions with the head coach and take into account what’s best for the players and the country."

Aguair, who plays a crucial role in shaping India’s goalkeepers, explained his approach, "My job is to help the goalkeeper gel with the rest of the team and fix any errors. It’s about constant improvement and confidence-building."

Speaking on India’s goalkeeper Elangbam Panthoi Chanu, Aguair had high praise, "She’s a talented youngster with great reflexes and a strong presence. She’s definitely capable of representing India for years to come."

"Now, our focus shifts to preparing for the AFC qualifiers in Australia. It’s a huge opportunity, and we’re determined to make the most of it," Aguair concluded.

Aguair’s success is a matter of pride for the state, inspiring young athletes and reflecting the vibrant Goan spirit in Indian football.
