United Club of Verna emerged victorious in the 33rd Arlem Rolling Trophy, defeating Shiroda Youth Club 2-0 in a high-octane final played at the Raia Panchayat ground on Sunday. The tournament was organised by the Arlem Youth Association.
In a tightly contested and fast-paced encounter, both teams created scoring opportunities early on. Jesloy Moniz of United Club Verna and Elton Cruz of Shiroda Youth Club came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half but failed to convert their chances.
The breakthrough for Verna came in the 51st minute when Clifton Rebello found the back of the net. Just nine minutes later, former India international Fulganco Cardozo doubled the lead with a well-taken goal, sealing the victory for his side.
United Club of Verna walked away with a winner’s purse of Rs 1,00,000 and a trophy, while runners-up Shiroda Youth Club received Rs 70,000 and a trophy.
The prize distribution ceremony was graced by Rajesh Faldessai, Chairman of the Goa Rehabilitation Board and MLA of Cumbarjua constituency, along with other dignitaries including Domnic Gauncar (Zilla Panchayat Member, Raia), Mario D’Souza (Sarpanch, VP Raia), Anthony Pango (GFA Senior Vice President, South Goa), Andrew Ferrao and Cosme Oliveira (GFA Executive Members), Luis Caetano Quadros (President, Raia Sporting Club), Shrikant Sawant (President, Youth Club Manora), Jerome Colaco, and several club officials.
