Goa’s sailing duo, Dayne Coelho and Katya Coelho, have qualified for the 2026 Asian Games after dominating the Asian Games Selection Trials held in Mumbai. Conducted in three rigorous phases between November 2025 and February 2026, the trials tested sailors across varying conditions, from light winds to physically demanding heavy-air races, demanding adaptability, endurance, and mental resilience.

Dayne topped the men’s category, while Katya emerged victorious in the women’s division, marking her third consecutive Asian Games qualification, a historic feat in Indian sailing. The journey was not without challenges. Katya broke her mast during a crucial race, but support from fellow competitors and her family ensured she continued. Both siblings used equipment personally purchased by their family, highlighting the immense sacrifices behind their success.

Their father, Donald Coelho, a renowned windsurfer, praised their resilience, saying, “Watching my children overcome adversity through sheer determination is more rewarding than any medal.”

The siblings now aim for medals at the Asian Games and have appealed for structured support in high-performance equipment, international training, sports science, and financial backing. Their achievement underscores not only personal excellence but also Goa’s growing presence in competitive Indian sailing.

Among other promising performers was Stefano Alvarez, whose skill in the first trial phase highlighted the state’s emerging talent.
