Dempo search for answers amid tough IFL campaign

Dempo's youth-driven approach is yet to translate into results on the pitch this season.

Dempo SC’s struggles continued in the I-League 2025–26 season, with the Goan giants rooted to the bottom of the table on two points after another disappointing outing.
Injuries to key players, including captain Ariston Costa, coupled with the late arrival of foreign recruits, have left the side struggling for rhythm and results. Defensive errors have once again proved costly, with key moments going against the Golden Eagles, particularly in their defeat to Sreenidi Deccan FC. Despite showing attacking intent in phases, the team has been unable to convert performances into results.
Supporters have been left frustrated as familiar frailties and inconsistent displays have kept Dempo anchored near the foot of the table. A 2-2 draw against Real Kashmir FC and a 3-1 loss to Sreenidi Deccan FC underlined a recurring pattern — a side capable of competing but lacking the game management and defensive organisation needed to close out matches.
Head coach Samir Naik has attempted to address the issues, including strengthening the attack with the mid-season inclusion of Marcus Joseph, whose presence has added a sharper edge in the final third. However, the lack of cohesion across units and recurring defensive lapses continue to undermine the team’s efforts.
The contrast with Dempo’s legacy remains stark. One of India’s most successful clubs with five league titles, the Golden Eagles have had to rebuild in recent years, focusing on sustainability rather than aggressive spending. Financial constraints have limited investment in infrastructure and high-profile signings, prompting a shift towards a model built on local talent, academy graduates and long-term youth development.
Dempo’s current struggles are therefore not merely a question of form but of transition. Balancing a long-term, youth-driven approach with the immediate demands of a results-oriented league remains a challenge, and how quickly they address issues in defence and game management will determine their progress in the remainder of the season.
