Margao: Navelim Sporting Club edged past Shiroda Youth Club 1-0 to storm into the semifinals of the 16th Davorlim Cup, organised by Sporting Club Davorlim, at the Panchayat Ground on Tuesday.
The match was played at a brisk pace with both sides displaying attacking intent from the outset. Navelim came close early on through Sweden Costa, who missed a scoring opportunity. Shiroda Youth Club too had their chances, with Kevin Dias failing to convert from a promising position.
The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Meavven Fonseca found the net with a neat finish to give Navelim a 1-0 lead at halftime.
After the change of ends, Richard Costa’s powerful strike sailed over the crossbar as Navelim looked to extend their lead. Shiroda responded with counter-attacks and nearly equalised when Astal Dias missed a golden opportunity with only the goalkeeper to beat. In injury time, Placito Cruz came agonisingly close, but his header narrowly missed the target.
Placito Cruz of Shiroda Youth Club was adjudged Man of the Match. The award was presented by Laxmidas Mangeshkar.
