Sao Jose de Areal edged past CRC Chinchinim 3-2 to move into the quarterfinals of the Mansion House Football Cup, organised by Cuncolim Union, at Chinchinim Government School round, Cuncolim, on Monday.
Early on, Sao Jose de Areal’s Jeston Fernandes tested the CRC goalkeeper with a power-packed shot in the third minute, while CRC’s Joshua Correia saw his move get foiled by the Areal defence in the 10th minute.
CRC Chinchinim drew first blood in the 22nd minute when Piedade Rebello scored with a fine placement shot. Sao Jose de Areal equalised in the 46th minute through Bersel Viegas.
The second half saw end-to-end action. Serio Gomes restored Chinchinim's lead in the 47th minute. However, the joy was short-lived as just three minutes later, Daryl Costa levelled for Sao Jose de Areal. Costa then struck again in the 52nd minute, completing his brace and sealing a 3-2 win for his team.
Earlier, the tournament was declared open by Vineet Bothra, Sales Head Goa, Mansion House, in the presence of Joseph Dias (VJT Arts), Oscar Martins (Organising Chairman), Sammy Tavares (Cultural Secretary of Cuncolim Union), Cian Fernandes (Treasurer of Cuncolim Union), along with other dignitaries and club officials.
The Man of the Match award was presented to Daryl Costa of Sao Jose de Areal by Vineet Bothra, Sales Head Goa, Mansion House.
