MARGAO: SC Davorlim secured a place in the semifinals of the 25th Benaulim Panchayat Cup after defeating Navelim Villagers Union 5-4 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw at the St John the Baptist Panchayat Ground, Benaulim.
Navelim Villagers Union enjoyed the better share of possession in the opening half and looked the more threatening side. However, SC Davorlim's disciplined defence stood firm, denying forwards Joyson Coutinho and Richard Costa any clear sight of goal as the teams went into the break locked at 0-0.
The second half was a closely fought affair with both sides battling for control in midfield. Chances were few and far between as neither team was willing to take unnecessary risks, resulting in another scoreless period and forcing the match into a penalty shootout.
In the tiebreaker, SC Davorlim kept their composure and converted their spot-kicks with precision to seal a 5-4 victory and advance to the last four.
Selvin Gomes was named Man of the Match and received the award from former India international footballer Climax Lawrence.
