MARGAO: St Anthony’s SC Assolda booked their spot in the semifinals of the 19th Super Soccer Inter-Village Football Tournament with a 4-2 win over Varca SC in a tense tiebreaker at the St John de Baptista football ground on Friday. The tournament is organized by UC Benaulim.
Assolda dominated proceedings, with midfielders Moises D’Sa and Joaquim Carvalho controlling the game. However, winger Richard Fernandes squandered two clear chances, while Varca goalkeeper Mohammad Shaikh made several key saves to keep his side in contention.
After the break, the story remained the same—Assolda continued to create chances but failed to convert, with both Richard and Sunny Fernandes missing opportunities. Varca’s midfielder Aaron Barreto came close with a powerful long-range strike, but neither side could find the net in regulation time.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, Assolda held their nerve with successful conversions from Moises D’Sa, Richard Fernandes, Sunny Fernandes, and Joseph Fernandes. Varca SC managed to score through Clayton Luis and Landan Mendonsa.
Joseph Fernandes of St. Anthony’s SC Assolda was named Man of the Match and received his award from GFA Executive Committee member Anthony Leo Fernandes.
