Responding to strong opposition from villagers, the organisers have decided to cancel the MRF Moto Grip Super Cross race—a significant victory for the local community.

Residents had firmly objected to the event, insisting that the ground should be used only for sports and community activities. With the cancellation, the focus can now return to developing the facility, including the long-awaited installation of a turf pitch for the benefit of local youth.

The Tollecanto Sports Complex, also known as the Velim Sports Complex, was constructed by former MLA Benjamin Silva but has remained incomplete since 2017, with the football pitch still unfinished. Villagers have repeatedly voiced concerns that hosting high-risk events such as motorcycle races would damage the ground and disrupt the peace of the area.

Zilla Parishad member Julio Fernandes joined the villagers in opposing the race and has requested the Sports Minister to revoke the permission, stressing that the ground must serve its intended purpose—supporting local players and residents in developing their sporting skills. Community leaders have insisted that outsiders must respect the needs and aspirations of the village.

Savio D’Silva has also expressed strong objections not only to the motorcycle race but also to any proposals to use the ground for bullfights. Senior citizens and other community members have echoed these sentiments. The ZP member has additionally intervened to ensure the ground’s gate was opened for jogging and public use.
