Coming down heavily on the BJP government for allowing Surat District Milk Federation (SUMUL) to set up its unit in the State, former chief minister Ravi Naik on Monday accused the government of trying to finish the co-operative movement in Goa.

Addressing a news conference in the city, Naik said services of Goa Dairy always benefited the local farmers and if SUMUL really comes here, then farmers will have a big problem.

“SUMUL may procure milk from Gujarat and may take subsidy from Goa government. If it sets up the dairy here, then Goa Dairy will definitely be in problems. Hence, all the dependents should oppose the move of the government,” Naik said.

He further said BJP has no right to finish the co-operative movement by bringing outside companies.

“It wants to boast to the people that they are doing something for the State, but what they are doing will mar the co-operative movement,” he reiterated.

“If government wants to increase milk production, then it should give facilities to the Goa Dairy and farmers. What is the need to bring SUMUL in Goa,” Naik questioned.

“This is a hidden agenda by the BJP government to benefit some individuals and people should oppose the move,” he added.

He said BJP leaders used coconut to perform ‘Garanne’ before the assembly election and now they are calling coconut tree as grass. “BJP should know the difference between grass and tree. Coconut tree gives so many good things to human beings. Even a family can earn their living on coconut trees,” Naik said.

He said protection should be given to the coconut tree. “BJP government has only given false assurances to the people of the State,” Naik alleged.
