Members of Keri-Tiracol-Palyem Gram Bachao Committee (KTPGBC) on Friday staged a protest in front of the Pernem Police station, demanding an offence to be registered against a Mumbai-based company for allegedly dredging the Tiracol river.

The protesters alleged that the Mumbai-based company had entered the Goa border and had started dredging the Tiracol river without taking approval from the government.

“The locals opposed the dredging and stopped the activity, but no department concerned registered offence against the company,” claimed a protester.

“We had convened a meeting at Kiranpani on January 10, and had demanded that the police should register an offence against the company concerned within 24 hours, but no official registered the offence. Hence, a one-day protest was staged in front of Pernem Police station,” added the agitator.

The committee president Sachin Parab said the government should immediately register an offence against the company concerned, failing which he threatened to intensify the agitation.

Former sarpanchas Francis Rodrigues (Tiracol) and Daniel D'Souza (Arambol), Dattaram Naik, Gajanan Naik, Babuso Talkar, Agustino D'Souza, Ajit Gawandi, Shashikant Pednekar and others took part in the one-day agitation.
