The server room at the Dena Bank's branch in Vasco was gutted in a fire in the wee hours of Saturday, causing a loss of about Rs 2 lakh.

According to reports, the Vasco fire services received a call at about 1 am regarding a fire at the Dena Bank in Vasco.

Responding to the call, a fire brigade rushed to the site and two fire tenders were used to extinguish the fire.

The fire fighters had a tough time battling the fire as the bank's premises was filled with thick smoke. They later broke open the rear window of the server room and extinguished the fire after a two-hour operation.

Speaking to The Goan, the bank's accountant Ratnadeep Moraskar, who is holding additional charge as the manager, said a short circuit is suspected to have sparked off the fire.

“The fire destroyed the router, modem, monitor and CPU, besides ATM paper rolls meant for receipts,” said Moraskar.

Responding to concerns regarding the safety of documents, Moraskar added: “All documents of our customers are safe as the fire destroyed only electrical items and some used ATM paper rolls.”

“The loss is estimated at Rs 2 lakh and we expect to replace all the destroyed material and electrical equipments by Sunday. The bank will be open to our customers on Monday,” added Moraskar.
