Team LegoGoa bagged the “Most Inspirational Team” Work-Core Values Award at the first Lego League (FLL), Robotics (Western zone) championship held in Mumbai and was listed in the top ten team.
Team LegoGoa was the smallest team which comprised of only three Students: Sai Pranav Gandhi , 9 years, Std III from Sharada Mandir School Miramar, Swayam Kakodkar, 10 years, Std V from Manovikas English Medium School Margao and Eric Siqueira, 13 years Std VIII from Sharada Mandir School, Miramar.
Team Lego Goa left a lasting impression on the judges and the organisers with their positive approach, and team spirit. The team did not undergo any formal robotics coaching. The team was mentored by their parents who had no prior academic training in robotics and their 16-year-old friend Eric Fernandes, a First-Year student from Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Government Polytechnic Panaji.
The FLL is designed as a sport for the mind and is an alliance between FIRST (For Inspiration & Recognition of Science & Technology) and the Lego group. The challenge has three parts: Robot Game, Project, and Core Values. Every year, FLL releases a challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. This year the challenge was on the theme “Into Orbit”. LegoGoa team also presented a project on growing food for space titled ‘Andromeadow, Growing Microgreens in space’. Experiments were done on growing Amaranthus (tambdi bhaji ) and mustard which would take care of the nutritional deficiencies in astronauts as well as provide them with fresh vegetables. The project book was also presented to the director of Agriculture.
This year’s FLL championship was hosted by one of Mumbai’s leading IB school - Mount Litera International School, and was held in January. More than 400 students aged between nine and 16 across the West Zone participated in the competition which included Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa.
Team LegoGoa was instrumental in spreading FLL initiatives in Goa by free coaching, helping in the launch of FLL Kickstarter event for school students, robotics workshops and also spreading the joy of robotics to slum kids of Goa. The team hopes to see many more teams from Goa participating in the First Lego League, over the coming years.
