LONDON

In a unique transformation, the basement hall of ‘The Social – Hounslow Market’, typically known for hosting parties and music events, became a sacred space of devotion as hundreds of Goans from across West London, Swindon and Milton Keynes gathered for the Novena and Feast of Our Lady of Vailankanni.

Organised by Allister Cajetan De Sa, this year’s celebration was moved from its previous venue at Fish Anchor Fish Shop, Hounslow, to accommodate the anticipated larger turnout.

Allister and Savito Tino Sequeira approached Malcolm Silveira for his ‘The Social - Hounslow Market’ basement hall exclusively for the 10-day devotion, from August 30 to September 8.

Speaking to The Goan, Malcolm said the nine days of prayer and reflection brought in over 300 devotees each day, uniting families in faith, music, and tradition, with the Feast Day drawing over 550 devotees who filled his venue to capacity.

“The organisers, Allister Cajetan De Sa, Savito Tino Sequeira, approached me for my hall to host the Novena and Feast. I wholeheartedly allowed my venue to be used for the Novena and Feast. The venue was shut down for business for the entire 10-day period of the Novena and Feast as a mark of respect,” said Malcolm.

When contacted, Allister said each evening of the Novena featured the Rosary and hymns rendered by Remiza, Effie, and Cathy, in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The prayers culminated in a grand celebration on September 8, the Feast Day of Our Lady of Vailankanni, with a vibrant procession that saw the statue of Our Lady carried along Hounslow High Street.

“Devotees brought flowers, candles, and heartfelt prayers, offering gratitude for blessings received and seeking spiritual solace. Floral offerings, melodious choirs, and colourful decorations created an atmosphere of deep reverence and joy,” said Allister.

“It was truly moving to see so many families united in faith and tradition.”

Acknowledging the efforts of the organising team, Allister extended heartfelt thanks to Valerie Dias, Valisha Dias, Tito Vallen Kenny Fernandes, Volney Vales, Lysander Monteiro, Vivek Ganachari, and Newton Shadrack for their dedication in managing the daily arrangements.

The celebration also featured community bonding beyond religious observances, with cultural performances, snacks, and refreshments creating a festive, social spirit.

As the event concluded, Allister Cajetan De Sa, along with his wife, Valerie Dias and son, Avner Valan De Sa, expressed their gratitude to all attendees and volunteers.

“We are humbled by the love and devotion shown, and a big thank you to everyone who contributed, including those who sponsored daily snacks and drinks. Next year, hopefully we will celebrate on an even larger scale.” Allister said.
