Non-governmental organisation GOACAN has urged authorities to activate the South Goa District Committee of Senior Citizens to address issues faced by elderly residents across the district. In a letter to South Goa District Collector Egna Cleetus, the NGO said grievances of senior citizens from Salcete, Mormugao, Ponda, Quepem, Sanguem, Dharbandora and Canacona could be effectively resolved if the committee becomes functional again.

GOACAN pointed out that the committee, meant to oversee the implementation of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 at the district level, was last notified on March 30, 2023 for a two-year term. Since its tenure expired on March 30, 2025, the committee has remained non-functional for nearly a year, the NGO said.
