PANAJI: A bhajan week -- Akhand Bhajan Saptak -- will be celebrated at the Sri Mahalaxmi Sansthan between July 29 and August 4. The 24-hour Bhajan Week will feature renowned Goan and outstation musicians who will perform bhajans and participate in other religious programmes through the week, Mahalaxmi Sansthan president, Srinivas Dempo, said.
Dempo said the Gram Devi Mahalaxmi Temple in Panaji was established by all members of the community and has completed 208 years.
“In 1899, there was a terrible epidemic in Panaji and history tells us that the people sat in the temple for seven days and prayed for the protection of the city from this epidemic,” Dempo said, adding that since then the communities from the city come and celebrate the week of uninterrupted bhajans.
The Akhand Bhajan Week will start from 9 am on Tuesday, July 29, and continue till the morning of August 5, he said. On Tuesday, July 29, the Navik Samaj will hold a programme, and on July 30, the Daivagya Brahmin Samaj will organise one. On July 31, the Bhatiyekar Samaj will be in charge, while on August 1, the Tarukar Samaj will organise it. The Malekar Samaj will hold a programme on August 2.
The event will feature famous singers like Omkar Shet, Abhishek Kale, Akshay Naik, Gautam Hede, Samarth Chodankar, Gautami Hede, Ganesh Mestry, Narsingh Sane.
