Palolem Ward Councillor Laxuman Pagui was on Thursday unanimously elected as the new chairperson of the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC). Pagui also became the fourth CMC Chairperson from the Akhil Goa Kshatriya Pagi Samaj after the top post was previously occupied by community members, Divakar Pagi, Samita Dhuri and Ratnakar Dhuri. Presiding officer and Dy Collector Madhukar Narvekar after scrutinising the lone nomination received from councillor Laxuman Pagui in the 12-member CMC for the vacant post of Chairperson, declared him elected unopposed in the presence of CMC Chief Officer Laxmikant Dessai. All councillors, including the outgoing CMC chairperson Sara Shamba Naik Desai, ex-chairpersons and councillors Simon Rebello and Ramakant Naik Gaunkar, Vice Chairperson Gandesh Madgaonkar, councillors Narcisco (Nadin) Fernandes, Amita Pagi, Hemant Naik Gaunkar, Pandurang (Dhiraj) Naikgaunkar, Supriya Dessai, Nitu Dessai, Shubham Komarpant were present. Simon Rebello, Ramakant Naik Gaunkar, Sara Shamba Naik Desai were the three councillors who served as CMC chairperson during the current term, which is likely to end during the first quarter of next year, thus giving a minimum of six months tenure to the newly elected chairperson Pagui.
