An unidentified man was killed after being run over by a goods truck in the industrial area of Karaswada, Mapusa. The truck driver, who fled the scene after the incident, was later nabbed with the help of Pune police.
A drifter in his mid-fifties had been sleeping on the main road near Geno Pharmaceuticals company in the industrial area for the past few days.
On Friday at around 11.30 pm, he was asleep under a goods truck parked by the roadside. The truck driver did not realise that a man was asleep under the vehicle and drove the truck, running over the man who died on the spot. The truck driver then fled the scene with the vehicle.
Upon receiving information of the accident, a Mapusa police team rushed to the spot, conducted an investigation, and sent the body for an autopsy at the GMC hospital at Bambolim.
The police also identified the truck responsible for the accident and alerted their counterparts in neighbouring Maharashtra and Karnataka. By then, the truck involved in the incident had crossed Sawantwadi-Maharashtra.
On Saturday afternoon, Pune police apprehended the suspected driver along with the truck involved in the incident. On receiving this information, a Mapusa police team left for Pune to take custody of the suspect.
