Margao police on Wednesday conducted another round of drives to remove people sleeping on the Margao Municipal garden benches.
Following instructions issued by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, the police now carry out repeated rounds of the Municipal garden to clear all those sleeping on the garden benches. The drive follows an outcry in the city about the increase in anti-social activities at the iconic Municipal garden.
Last week, the Margao MLA told the media that he had issued strict instructions to the Margao police to clear the anti-social elements from the Municipal garden. He had further instructed the police to clamp down on vending by migrants at the Margao Comunidade Square adjoining the Margao Municipal building.
Following the MLA’s instructions, the Margao police personnel have now made the Margao Municipal garden a regular patrolling point to drive away people sleeping on the garden benches and engaging in anti-social activities.
In fact, the MLA is exploring the possibility of getting NGOs to distribute free food to people at some point to avoid overcrowding at the Municipal garden.
