The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has issued a notice to the Superintendent of Police (South) in connection with a complaint filed by a Quepem resident alleging police harassment.

Acting Chairperson Desmond D’Costa and Member Pramod Kamat directed the South Goa SP to submit a reply and remain present for the hearing scheduled on April 2 at 10:30 am.

A complaint was lodged by Ganesh Raghoba Gauns Dessai, a senior citizen, who claimed that he and his family suffered extreme mental trauma, religious discrimination and harassment by the Quepem police. He alleged that the police acted under the influence of powerful and politically connected individuals.

Dessai named a police inspector, a retired police trainer from the Valpoi training centre and a member of a regional political outfit among others, for allegedly denying him and his family their fundamental rights while conducting his wife’s funeral last month. He further accused them of trespass, wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation, seeking urgent intervention from the GHRC.

Following the complaint, the Commission issued a notice to the South SP, directing a response and personal appearance at the next hearing.
