Goa is witnessing a surge in UPI transactions, and January 2026 saw a record-breaking turnover of Rs 6064 crore in just one month.
The growing popularity of UPI transactions can be attributed to "easy to operate" mode for payments. The State has seen an increasing usage of the UPI App in the past few years, and the first month of this year saw the highest turnover in the past two years. The previous such record-breaking transaction was in December 2025 (Rs 5990 crore) and May 2025 (Rs 5629 crore). In December 2024, the transactions amounted to Rs 5427 crore, according to a report issued by the Union Ministry of Finance.
The UPI ecosystem includes various nationalised and private banks apps as well as PhonePay, BHIM Pay, Google Pay, Paytm, etc. The surge in transaction figures in the past two years points towards the peak tourist seasons – December and May, when more tourist footfalls are witnessed in the State compared to other months, which leads to more UPI payments.
The January 2026 record-breaking payments have led Goa to the 23rd position among all Indian States. The total number of transactions for reaching this figure were 4.03 crore which is also a record-breaking number. In January 2025, there were UPI payments of Rs 5030 crore while January 2024 registered payments of Rs 4317 crore. There were 4.02 crore transactions in December 2025.
Considering state-wise figures, Maharashtra recorded over Rs 2.67 lakh crore in UPI transaction turnover in January 2026. It was followed by Karnataka with Rs 1.64 lakh crore and Uttar Pradesh with Rs 1.53 lakh crore. In contrast, the number of transactions in Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura was significantly lower compared to the rest of the Indian States.
