PANAJI: Two state-of-the-art RoRo ferries, built in Goa using advanced technology, will begin operations within a month, River Navigation Minister Subhash Phal Dessai announced.

“These ferries have been made with the best of technology and are capable of carrying 12 to 14 four-wheelers along with 150 passengers,” he said. “They’ve been designed to replace six traditional ferries operating on one busy route, significantly improving efficiency and reducing congestion.”

The minister highlighted that ramps on both sides of the river have already been widened to accommodate the RoRo ferries, and trial movements have been observed successfully. “Though an official trial is yet to take place, the ferries have already demonstrated smooth movement,” he added.

Describing it as a proud moment for Goans, Phal Dessai emphasized that the ferries were built locally. “Our Goan workforce is fully capable of such shipbuilding. This is a testament to their skill and commitment.”

He noted that the introduction of RoRo ferries marks a major shift in Goa’s inland water transport, bringing high speed and load-bearing capabilities to the forefront. While only one route will be operational to start with, additional ferries are planned for other busy routes in the future, depending on feasibility and profitability.

“These ferries are government-funded, and we believe they will prove the capabilities of our navigation system,” he said.

When asked about the costs involved, the minister said an official announcement on that front will follow.
