Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar highlighted the growing trend of Goan youth opting for jobs on ships and in Europe instead of pursuing agriculture in their home State.
He noted that many educated young individuals are seeking opportunities abroad or in other parts of the country, leading to a decline in farming activities.
Shirodkar stressed the importance of preserving agriculture and preventing farmland from lying barren.
He acknowledged the decreasing use of irrigation water for farming and emphasised the need to attract young people back to agriculture through subsidies, modern machinery and advanced technology.
“We cannot stop our youth from seeking better opportunities, but at the same time, agriculture should not be neglected,” he said.
The minister also revealed that following the COVID-19 pandemic, several young Goans have returned to farming, particularly in vegetable production.
He underscored the need to maintain this trend to ensure that agriculture remains a viable livelihood option in the State.
The growing preference for overseas jobs among Goans has been a long-standing concern, with many choosing maritime careers or employment opportunities in the UK and Europe over traditional occupations like farming.
While the trend of migration continues, Shirodkar’s comments underline the need for policies that support and revive agriculture, making it a more attractive option for the younger generation.
