The entire world is fighting the pandemic. Hospitals are facing a shortage of ventilators while treating COVID-19 patients. Mechanical ventilators or Bag Valve Mask (Ambu Bag) is a life-saving device used by health professionals. These ventilators may be required in larger numbers due to an increase in the number of patients.
Dr Sachin Dnyandeo Kore from School of Mechanical Sciences, IIT Goa has developed a mechanical ventilator based on automatic compression of Ambu bag. This work was carried out with the support and advice from Prof B K Mishra, Director, IIT Goa, Prof Bidyadhar Subudhi, Dean R&D, IIT Goa and Prof Dhirendra Bahadur, IIT Goa. Bhavesh Das helped Dr Kore in this development work.
Design of various parts for the mechanical ventilator was carried out at IIT Goa.
Design of Slider, Crank, Punch and Casing Block of the mechanical ventilator was carried out using Computer-Aided Design facility of IIT Goa. Further manufacturing of components was carried out using 3D printing and other manufacturing facilities available at IIT Goa. IIT Goa is looking forward for the industry and research collaborations regarding the clinical evaluation of the ventilator and commercialisation of the product.
