Transfer of 2,400 sq m land for construction of Dr Ambedkar Bhavan okayed
PANAJI
The Goa Cabinet on Tuesday approved the transfer of a 2,400 square metre parcel of land in Porvorim for the construction of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Bhavan, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said.
Addressing the media after the cabinet meeting, Sawant said the Bhavan will be a facility which will celebrate the legacy of Dr B R Ambedkar and will also serve as a community centre for cultural and social activities of the communities designated as Scheduled Caste (SC) as also for socially disadvantaged sections in the State.
“Cabinet has cleared this proposal to transfer the identified land to the concerned department for setting up the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Bhavan,” Sawant said.
He also claimed that his government is committed to uplift and empower the marginalised sections by providing them with infrastructural facilities like the Ambedkar Bhavan.
The site is situated close to the Goa Legislative Assembly complex and once complete the bhavan will have a library, educational facilities, a multipurpose hall and conference rooms.
Legal hitch to
tribal bhavan
Meanwhile amidst the ongoing political turmoil in the tribal communities of Goa where some sections have accused the government of a lack of will to build the long-delayed tribal bhavan, Sawant said that it was a legal dispute over the land ownership which is the only obstacle.
Two Scheduled Tribe (ST) community associations have staked claim to the land identified for the project and the matter is currently before the courts," Sawant said.
“There is a legal issue. Apart from that, there is no other issue as far as the government is concerned in executing the tribal bhavan project,” Sawant said.
The Tribal Bhavan, meant to be a dedicated facility to support the development and welfare of Goa’s tribal communities, has been a long-delayed project.
