Fourth leadership change in a year
MARGAO
Instability in the Margao Municipal administration has come back to haunt Madgavkars again.
For, Tuesday saw the government transferring Margao Municipal Chief Officer Melvyn Vaz from the civic body by posting Madhu Narvekar as the new Chief Officer. Melvyn’s transfer assumed significance and comes against the backdrop of the fact it has come just three days before the scheduled meeting of the Margao Municipal Council on Friday.
Incidentally, Madhu Narvekar is the fourth Chief Officer to take over the reins of Margao Municipal Administration as the Chief Officer in the last one year.
In fact, Melvyn Vaz has received the transfer order from the government on Tuesday even before he could complete one year in office. He was transferred and posted as MMC Chief Officer in September 2024.
Sources said that Margao Municipality has had four Chief Officers in the last one year. Instability in the Municipal administration began after the government abruptly transferred then CO Gaurish Sankhwalkar from office in July last year when the Assembly session was under.
After his transfer, the government appointed Ajit Panchwadkar as the new Chief Officer in his place. But, given that Panchwadkar was holding the main charge as Director Social Welfare Department, the government shunted him out to bring in Melvyn Vaz in September last year.
Sources pointed out that relations between Chief Officer Melvyn Vaz and the powers that be in the civic body had come under strain for reasons unknown.
Melvyn Vaz, when contacted, has confirmed that he has received the transfer order on Tuesday.
