The issue of unregulated waste disposal has surfaced in Curtorim, with residents flagging rampant dumping of garbage along the roadside in the Panchwadd area.
Locals have expressed concern over the lack of enforcement mechanisms to curb the growing menace. They questioned why authorities, particularly the police, have not taken strict action against those responsible for the illegal dumping.
Residents pointed out that while Curtorim village has been facing garbage woes, licences are being issued to housing projects with impunity.
Resident and local leader Moreno Rebello on Wednesday took members of the media to the affected stretch in Panchwadd, pointing to spots where waste has been discarded along the road. He acknowledged that the panchayat has made efforts to clear the waste periodically but stressed that the problem persists due to a lack of deterrence.
Rebello questioned why the police are not being roped in to crack the whip against unscrupulous elements disposing of waste along the roadside.
