MARGAO
Has the Margao Municipal Council initiated any action against the five gaddas on the Aquem Power House footpath in view of the directions issued by the South Goa District Collector, Egna Cleetus?

Sources in the Margao Municipality informed that the buck stops at the door of the Margao Municipal Chief Officer, Melvyn Vaz, saying the matter at hand falls in the domain of the administration.

Sources further stated that the Chief Officer has still not initiated any action against the gaddas, but has started the process of seeking legal advice from municipal lawyers on how to go about the matter.

Officials in the know, however, told 'The Goan' that the Municipality is required to comply with the High Court’s directions issued way back in the late ’90s in respect of gaddas and stalls on footpaths and road-widening areas. “High Court guidelines to tackle gaddas and carts on footpaths and road-widening areas have been in place since the late ’90s. Hence, tackling gaddas on footpaths ought to have been an ongoing process by the MMC,” officials added.
