Now, Panjimites to seggregate solid waste into 16 different categories

The Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has now categorised the solid waste into 16 different categories and has asked all residents to undertake the segregation of solid waste.

Now, the solid waste has to be segregated as per 16 categories and the civic body has granted 30-day period to the various bodies to comply with the notification warning of penalties under solid waste management and handling bye-laws if they fail to do so.

The notice is applicable to all residents of multi-storeyed buildings, apartments, and also hotels, restaurants, buildings owned and occupied by Central and State government departments or undertakings, hospitals as they have to undertake segregation of solid waste before delivering it to the Corporation.

The Panaji city has a door-to-door collection system for waste but as per CCP categorisation 16 different categories include e-waste, paper, tube lights and bulbs, batteries, clothes, glass, coconut shells, soft and hard plastic, etc.

In Panaji, within the municipal waste, recyclable items comprise of 13.25% glass, 1.49% metal, 7.29% paper, 13.24% plastics and 7.16% textiles.

CCP has a unique 5-way segregation policy in place which is now upgraded to 16-way segregation. Panaji has developed material processing facilities which are well linked to dry waste collection center in each of 12 zones.
