Orange alert until Tuesday, wind speeds could go up to 60 kmph: IMD

Heavy rains lashed the State in the latter part of Sunday disrupting vehicular movement and confining people mostly to their homes even as the Met Centre at Altinho issued an "orange alert" until Tuesday, warning of heavy rainfall alongwith winds of up to 40-50 kmph which could gust up to 60kmph.

Reports of tree falls disrupting traffic and normal life came in from different parts of the State with the most intense disruption occurring at Bhoma late evening when a huge mango tree got uprooted and fell on the highway road.

A case of drowning at a mining quarry in Tivim where a group of friends had gone on a picnic claimed the life of a young police constable hailing from Porvorim, Akash Naik.

Sanguem meanwhile recorded the most overnight rainfall on Sunday with the station there reporting 146.7 mm followed by neighbouring Dharbandora station which reported 124.8 mm of rainfall. 

At other stations Sunday's overnight was recorded at 114.8 mm in Old Goa, 107.9 mm in Panaji, 105.8 mm in Ponda, 102.8 mm in Mormugao, 100 mm in Quepem, 90 mm in Margao, 83.8 mm Sanquelim, 59.4 mm in Pernem  and 36.3 mm in Mapusa. 

From June 18 onwards, the intensity of the rain is expected to reduce, with a yellow alert issued for the following days till June 21, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places.
