Police trace 51 mobile phones with CEIR portal, return to owners

After losing his mobile phone on October 10, Mervin D’Souza from Candolim lodged a police complaint least expecting to get it back.

But on November 4, Calangute Police traced his mobile phone to Marcel and handed it over to Mervin on Friday.

Mervin was one among 51 persons including tourists whose lost or misplaced cell phones were traced and handed over to their owners.

“The mobiles could be tracked because of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal – ceir.gov.in – of the Union Department of Telecommunications (DOT),” said Paresh Naik, Calangute PI.

Naik said 51 mobile phones of different high-end brands like Samsung and OnePlus totally worth around Rs 13 lakh were tracked and recovered. Before the portal was launched, there were very few chances of recovering lost phones.

According to Calangute PI, details like the IMEI number are uploaded onto the CEIR portal. He said the phone gets blocked once a complaint is lodged with the police.
