Rainwater harvesting is one method that can be used to conserve water. The technique of rainwater harvesting helps to restore the ground water level by storing the available rainwater collected from a roof-like surface and redirected to a tank, cistern, deep pit (well, shaft, or borehole), aquifer, or a reservoir, so that it seeps down and restores the ground water.

Goa, receiving abundant rainfall during the monsoon, has great potential to carry out water harvesting. And one such example can be seen in the village of Ravona, Kelawade, Keri Sattari Goa. where Vinay Gawas and villagers are already working on developing a proper water harvesting channel to provide sufficient water for the farmers of the village to carry out agricultural activities without any obstacles as it is their only occupation.

This pilot project was started 2 years back under the JAL - SHAKTI Abhiyan initiative proposed by the Government of India with a guidance from the Department of Water Resources-Goa. The stored water has helped boost the agricultural activities with farmers being able to produce 17 tonnes of vegetables per month.

The Water Resources Department has also created an awareness video on Jal Shakti - Catch the Rain to spread the message of "Catch the Rain - when it falls, where it falls".
