Tension prevailed in Bicholim after angry protesters blocked the main Bicholim-Sanquelim road late Wednesday evening, to demand the presence of self-styled activist Shreya Dhargalkar at the Bicholim police station.

The protestors have accused Dhargalkar of inflammatory statements against the Dhonds and devotees of Goddess Lairai at Shirgao.

On hearing news that the Bicholim police had obtained custody of Dhargalkar from the Cuncolim police, hundreds of protesters assembled at the Bicholim police station to demand the presence of Dhargalkar.

Bicholim DySP Sagar Ekoskar informed the protesters that the police had already taken custody of Dhargalkar from the Cuncolim police and that they had already sought custody of the accused. The DySP pointed out that due to law and order situation, Dhargalkar was not brought to the Bicholim police station.

DySP Ekoskar and PI Rahul Naik tried to pacify the protesters but they did not relent and hundreds of protestors then blocked the main Bicholim-Sanquelim  road near the police station, disrupting traffic in the area.

The situation was tense as protestors refused to disperse from the road and insisted on the presence of Dhargalkar at the Bicholim police station.

North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal and Bicholim MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye rushed to the site and were in talks with the protestors.

SP Kaushal confirmed that Dhargalkar has been remanded to judicial custody till June 4.
