In a major accident on Wednesday, a private Fortuner SUV driven by a tourist rammed into a scooter, leaving a 45-year-old Siolim resident battling for life in the ICU of Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Bambolim.

The mishap occurred at Assagao when the speeding SUV collided with the two-wheeler and dragged the rider along with the scooter for nearly 15 metres.

The injured, identified as Julio Lobo of Siolim-Marna, was first rushed by locals to the Siolim Primary Health Centre and later shifted to the Mapusa District Hospital. He was subsequently referred to GMC for advanced treatment.

According to sources, Lobo sustained multiple injuries – including a fractured leg and hand, broken ribs, deep bruises on one side of his body and bleeding from the ear. He is yet to regain consciousness and remains in the ICU.

The tourist driver was detained soon after the incident and brought to the Anjuna Police Station, where a case of rash and negligent driving was registered. The accused has since been arrested.

In a curious twist, police sources disclosed that the same tourist had earlier visited the Anjuna Police Station on Wednesday to assist a friend who had been involved in a separate accident earlier in the day – after ramming his rented car into another scooter.

The Anjuna Police are now probing both incidents as part of an ongoing investigation.
